CAR T Therapy for certain Autoimmune diseases

When it comes to combating Autoimmune diseases, researchers believe there may be potential in CAR T cell therapy.

Just as T cells can be taught to attack cancerous cells, they may also be taught to attack malfunctioning immune cells. Researchers believe that, when used to address autoimmune diseases, CAR T cell therapy may help the body destroy malfunctioning immune cells and potentially lead to improvement or remission.

  • CAR T cell therapy (Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T Cell) is a type of immunotherapy that is most commonly given to individuals who have specific types of cancer.  BMS is evaluating CAR T therapy in study participants for its potential effectiveness in treating certain autoimmune diseases.  In the case of certain cancers, CAR T cell therapy is used to teach a patient’s T cells how to target and destroy the cancerous cells in their body.1​

    • A CAR is a special receptor (a structure that receives a message to act a certain way in the body) created in a laboratory. CARs are made to connect with certain proteins on a cell.​
    • Autologous T cells are a kind of white blood cell, which attacks foreign invaders in the body.​
